ROCK OPERA 1:
"WHEN GEOLOGY BECOMES PURE POETRY"

"The mystery of the mountains” is a cultural project that has for some years now turned its attention to the invisible, the mysterious and the sacred forces of nature. This year, with "Rock Opera 1" a trilogy has been inaugurated dedicated to rock.
The trilogy celebrates the fascinating and emotive geology of the mountain groups of Adamello and Brenta. The gaze of these great chains, one set against the other, have met day after day for many millions of years in a coexistence that geology labels as unique, and that the traveller admires with enchanted wonder.
This geology presents us with a duality of dolostone and granite, and the "Mystery of the Mountains" seizes both on its scientific and artistic aspect, the natural and the literary that entwine and inspire the theme of the couple.
The courage of poetry and the courage of action are embodied respectively by the poet Maria Luisa Spaziani and the alpine climber Bruno Detassis, the two spokespeople of "Rock Opera 1". A central moment in the event is their interview on the subject of courage, that is to say the courage to go that extra step with thought and feeling, and the courage to take on the rock face. The temperament and the firmness of the rock are well represented by this man and this woman's life and work, quite different though they are one from the other.

The project began life in 2002, the International Year of the Mountains, and takes up the mandate of the Convention for the protection of the Alps, supported by the European Community. It is backed by the Azienda per il Turismo Spa of Madonna di Campiglio, Pinzolo e Val Rendena. The planning is by Roberta and Giacomo Bonazza (Gruppo Alte Quote).

The following text is a selection of the two interviews conducted by Roberta Bonazza.

Bruno Detassis
The mountains are always mysterious, and mountaineering brings to consciousness what the real nature of prudence is.
Maria Luisa Spaziani
Poetry is always transgression, in the sense that by its very nature it always goes beyond the threshold of accepted wisdom. It is herein that the mystery lies. Seeing what is beyond the horizon, beyond the thing itself, beyond feelings themselves. Feelings are not enough, feelings must have some kind of direction.
Bruno Detassis
If one of us goes into the mountains, a form of intelligence must take over. I want to go there? So I have to consider whether I am capable of going there. Because the mountain does not signify death, the mountain means prudence and joy. Each of us makes of it what we can.
Maria Luisa Spaziani
As for courage itself, it is above all about getting passed that laziness that fails to push you to find synapses, different bonds, that habit that makes you say that one and one is two. Simply that. This too is courage, just going against the flow. To go against the flow with your opinions for example. The courage to take up the career of poet, which if it is a career, is an enormously risky one. Because you could die of hunger. Nobody will guarantee you a pension, or guarantee assistance. You take it on at your own risk. There is then the courage to sustain opinions that are important to everyone, in politics for example, if you believe in them. There has been communist poetry. There has been great Christian poetry. This is important because it sets you against some people when you have a message, it takes courage, it takes courage. And then precisely day-to-day courage. The poet wants to have all the experiences that he or she comes up against, even where they are negative. It takes courage to face up to these.
Bruno Detassis
Because if you go into the mountains, and you go with the head held low, you will have nothing to learn but the fatigue. But if you look around you, nature is a most wonderful thing.
